Our friends over at Feldenkrais First recently reminded me of a provocative Moshe Feldenkrais quote from his book The Potent Self, and I can’t stop thinking about it.

Even Feldenkrais himself said it may sound “utterly preposterous” at first:

The sensation of effort is the subjective feeling of wasted movement.

Think about that for a moment. It’s unequivocal, but is he really saying that sensing ANY effort implies that our biomechanics could be better? Isn’t feeling effort ok? A little effort is easy to push through with willpower, which can be satisfying, right? And what about feeling effort when we exercise – isn’t that ok?!

Feldenkrais’s ideas about how best to improve ourselves were radical when he first taught them, and like this one, many still are.

In October’s pay-what-you-can FP Weekly Zoom Classes we’ll crack open this dense nugget of wisdom through Feldenkrais Awareness Through Movement (ATM) lessons, short talks, and after class discussions on the topic of effortless action.

Benefits of ATM study include reduced pain, more satisfying and sustainable patterns of action (in day-to-day, athletic, and artistic movement), enriched self-discovery and personal autonomy, and a more accessible sense of calm and comfort. We learn to function with more ease, confidence, and pleasure in all that we do. Together we study Feldenkrais in pursuit of a more skillful, intentional, and joyful life!

  • We study a wide variety of ATM lessons. Ongoing discussion with students influences my lesson choices. Please contact me with requests for specific lessons or learning topics.
  • We enjoy unrecorded discussion after class, for students who attend live and wish to stay to chat.
  • Newcomers are very welcome, though the last class of the month may not be appropriate for newcomers to Feldenkrais.

The FP Weekly class is an opportunity to be in a lively nurturing dialog of curiosity about the principles and practice of the Feldenkrais Method, so we can harness its wonderful self-improvement tools to move and feel better in all that we do.

In the Twin Cities, MN, USA? Some Wednesdays at 5:45pm I teach an in-person version of the FP Weekly Class lesson I led the morning before. Click here to see if a class is running now.

See you on the mat,

– Nick
